Nuala:Hello, My Name is Nuala Corr, I am Joint Head of International Office at Queen’s University Belfast.

主持人：Congratulations, Ms Nuala Corr, for winning this Tencent Award for Favoured UK University Among Chinese Families”. Could you please introduce your institute for Tencent users?

Nuala:We are delighted to be here to accept this award. Queen’s University Belfast was founded by Royal Charter in 1845, Queen’s is the 9th oldest university in the UK, and is known as ‘the Oxbridge of Northern Ireland’. Queen’s is also a proud member of the Russell Group which is equal to Ivy League in USA. We are proud of our rich heritage.

Queen’s is the 25th most international university in the world, offering a world-class education that prepares our students for leadership and citizenship in a global society. (THE World University Rankings 2018). In recent QS Ranking, Queen’s is ranked Top 180 in the World, 15 Queen’s subjects in the top 200, Queen’s many subjects ranked UK Top 10, 21 Queen’s subjects ranked in the Top 20 in the UK on Times Ranking, such as Accounting and Finance ranked Top 3, Food Science ranked Top 4. Queen’s has over 2,000 alumni in China, which includes graduates, award holders, exchange students and Mitchell Scholars. The biggest Queen’s alumni network outside the UK and Ireland. Queen’s Management School, it is highly ranked amongst business schools in the RG for quality of teaching, student satisfaction. One of the University’s strategic objective is on ensuring students are prepared for the work place.

We do this through, embedded placements, internships, industry-led projects. We are currently no. 1 in the UK for Knowledge Transfer partnerships, where we use expertise to influence the private sector.

Queen’s University is situated in Belfast, the capital city of Northern Ireland, plays a significant role in the UK’s relationship with China, with the Chinese Consulate General having a base in Belfast. The links with China date back to an Alumni of Queen’s Sir Robert Hart who established the custom service and postal service in China.

主持人：Education in all areas have been developing very fast recently, could you please share with us the achievement of your institution, especially in China?

Nuala:Yes. The university is very adapted to changes and we are trying to be a more and innovative university and to meet the needs of the changing market we're putting a lot more investment into research and into facilities to ensure that we are meeting the needs of society.

I have just come along a recent trip with our vice chancellor and president. We started by visiting Nanjing where the president led the E9 forum. The E9 is a consortium made up of a number of Chinese and UK leading universities including Cambridge, Liverpool, Beijing University of Technology and Harbin University. There was a lot of discussions about innovations and possible joint PHDs.

And we moved on from that and went to Shenzhen where we celebrated our 20-year partnership. We run a foundation with Shenzhen university and we followed that by hosting our very first alumni events which we had over two hundred of our Alumni attended and we've had over thirty thousand followers on WeChat，because of the alumni event. We had brought along some key industry such as Tencent and Huawei, CBBC to the alumni event and then after that we went to Shenyang where Queens actually works in partnership with China Medical University and we have a joint college in Shenyang called China Queen's college where students can study pharmacy in Shenyang which is also very successful cooperation with us and we want to extend these in the future.

主持人：What is the biggest gain for your university in the year of 2018? What kind of plan do you have for the future?

Nuala:The biggest gain is actually for Northern Ireland on Belfast itself. The UK government have just confirmed a billion-pound investment for the university which will bring along more skilled job opportunities and innovation for students, so our university have led very much from the education side into that day and it'll bring brilliant opportunities for both international and local students.

A great example of, we are starting to adapt to the needs more and to meet the requirements of society is that we are working more in research with industries and we are looking to do more further collaborations in this area.

Moving forward the University plans to become more innovative in terms of Joint PhD’s in a number of forms including jointly supervised PhD’s, summer schools and increased links to industry in China.

A great example of Queen’s university Belfast is an economic powerhouse of innovation and has a vital role to play in generating the knowledge and skills needed to fuel our economy – locally, nationally and internationally. An independent analysis by London Economics has revealed that Queen’s University Belfast contributes £1.9 billion to the UK economy - economic benefit to cost ratio of 6:1.

主持人：What kind of plans do you have in 2019?

Nuala:we have lots of plans, especially to work on better and more successful with our partners that we have. In China we have over forty partner universities. one of the universities key ambitions and strategic objectives is to make sure the students are prepared for the workplace. We're setting up and a lot of links with industry and we're embedding placements and internships, summer programs into all of our degrees to ensure that students are very internationally aware of heard when they come out of university.

主持人：How do you perceive the current education market?

Nuala:We believe china has become a more sophisticated market. We also can see that china institutions are becoming very strong and they are appearing a lot higher in the rankings and maybe when we started in china and so we have to be more flexible in our approach and with our partnerships. And a good example of this is the joint PHDs where we would have to work very closely but in a more flexible manner with these cities.

主持人：What kind of opportunities do we need to seize? Also, what kind of challenges do we need to tackle?

Nuala:In order to encourage students to come to the UK, we have to be more distinctive in our offering and provide more opportunities for students such as industry relationships and more flexible collaborations with Chinese partners. A good example of this is the proposal to investigate the possibility of joint PhD programmes.

The opportunity we need to seize is for more internationalization between the UK universities and Chinese universities. So that also includes students from the UK travelling to china to make the most of the cooperation.

The challenges are within the UK are challenges with Brexit and the uncertainty of what that might bring. Thankfully, though it does look like it will impact the international students coming to the UK and we just need to make sure that we're working very closely with the government. And on our recent visit to Shenyang, our vice chancellor and president received a call from the prime minister Theresa May, so he had to return to a meeting with Theresa May and at Belfast.

Nuala:We would like to thank the students and families who have votes for us. We are so delighted and so overwhelming to receive this award. Belfast is a very friendly city and Queens' is very friendly campus. We're renown for quality life and for being the most friendly city in the UK. It's very family-oriented city as well. We're so delighted and that we were recognized in that manner by the families. We really look after the students when they come to queens and we love to see the parents and families attending graduation which is such a special time for us and we like to take this opportunity to invite families and students to come and visit Belfast and experience high and beautiful Belfast in Northern Ireland in the UK.
