国内很多报道也都提到，这种争论的核心，是关于博雅教育与职业教育的讨论。今天能量君请来了毕业于卫斯理学院的Victoria导师和UC-Berkeley的Daniel导师，谈谈对这件事情的看法，希望给各位家长和同学以帮助。

当我想到芝加哥大学的时候，我的第一印象是本科申请阶段，芝大那些奇葩而具有挑战性的文书题目。比如说，当年我申请大学的时候就有一个题目是：布拉图和Playdough玩具泥有什么相似之处?很明显，芝大的文书需要我们跳出传统的“为什么申请者所大学”文书思路。

芝加哥大学的本科文理学院是美国高等教育里传统文理博雅教育的支柱之一。若选择来芝加哥大学上本科，就本不该期待有项目制和动手性强的教育。芝加哥大学的形象还是更倾向于亚里士多德与苏格拉底的希腊传统–为了学习而学习，为了辩论与发现而探索。
WhileUChicago’spre-professionalgraduateprogramscoverbusiness,publicpolicy,healthandsomuchmore,thatisnottheusewehavegivenundergraduateeducation.Undergraduateeducationis,formanypeople,theperfecttimeforthemtoshapetheirthinkingforfouryearsinlife-changingways.Butwiththewaytheworldischanging,learningisbecomingmoregoal-orientedtoleadtopracticalresults.Wehavemoreuniversitieswithbusiness-orientedundergraduateprogramsandmoreschoolsthatadvertiselearningthatwillsolverealworldproblems.Thereisongoinghypeandmanyschoolsaretryingtoridethatwavetostayrelevant.
芝加哥大学的研究生学院会涉及商科、公共政策、医学等等但是本科教育更加纯粹。本科教育本来就是很多学生在步入成年后的第一个可以转换自己思维和学习的机会。但是世界的方向是更倾向于目的导向的学习，因此才会有更多大学在本科阶段开启商科项目，声称可以来他们那里学习改变世界和解决社会问题的方法。

其实芝加哥大学该不该偏离自己传统的根基去追逐更多职业化的道路都不是一个合格的问题。世界各地的学生来到美国得到高等教育就是为了因为能满足在他们本国得不到的资源和丰富性。美国的教育提供了无限的选择和自由。因此，我也应该去保持这种学则的多元性。
LeavechangingtheworldandtacklingreallifeproblemstoschoolslikeHarvard,MIT,andStanfordattheundergraduatelevel.UChicago’scoreundergraduatevalueliesinitsabilitytoprovideoneofthestrongesttheoreticaleducationmodelsinthecountry.Thetheoriesandacademicresearchtheyproduceisthenutilizedbyotheruniversitiesthatproducemorehands-onandvisiblework.JustlikeinacompanythathasanR&Ddepartmentandthenoperationsexecution,universitiesarealsocapableofworkingtogetherinasimilarway.Iftheyeachdideverything,thatwouldmakethemthesame,andtherewouldbelessfunandvaluetoeachastheywillhaveaweakerbrand.
请把用action改变世界的远大志向交给哈佛、斯坦福、麻省理工等学校来承担。芝加哥大学的本科核心理念来源于它有着美国最强悍的本科理论基础教育。这里出来的学生和学者所产出的理论和学术研究会被更注重行动的大学所引用并且激发他们去创造。如同一个公司里面会有研发部门和战略执行部门和运营等，大学之间的配合也一样。如果每一个大学所做的事情都一样，对于学生也会乏味很多，同时大学之间怎么来宣传自己的与众不同?
UChicagohasalwaysbeenrelativelyantipre-professional.Manyuniversitieswithmoretraditionalliberalartsmodelsareexperimentingwithmoreprofessionaldegreesasthehighpricetagsforeducationrisesandemployabilityinatoughworldmakespeoplelesskeentothinkpurelyabouteducationasanintellectualpursuit,butalsoasameanstoastablecareer.Tostayrelevantandpopularamongstudents,itisunderstandableuniversitiesaretrying,butforUChicago,it’sundergraduatebrandisbuiltuponintenseintellectualactivityandout-of-the-boxthinking.Theintroductionofpre-professionalmajorswouldbedivergingfromitsbrandandthatissomethingthatwhilecanappealtoacertainsegmentofstudents,itdilutestheUChicagoimageandthus,fortheundergraduateprogramasawhole,Ibelieveitwaswiseforthemtoretractthebusinessmajorandleaveitasatrackwithineconomics,becauseUChicagoisnotheretotrainstudentsthesamewayNYUStern,UCBerkeleyHaas,MITSloan,orUPennWhartonhopestotrainstudentstoview,approach,andactintheworld.Theyeachservetheirownpurposeandworktogethertoprovidethediverseeducationresourcesthatstudentfromaroundtheworldcomeinpursuitof.
芝加哥大学其实一直就是相对排斥职业预备课程体系的。让一个如此自认清高的高冷学术范大学开始自我怀疑也是难得的事情。为了配合每年增长的学费和渐渐远离纯粹学习而靠拢为了好工作而学习的世道，也很理解芝加哥大学的纠结。但是他的本科品牌就是来源于他与众不同挑战性极强的学术派。所以他不创立一个自立门户的本科商学项目而是在经济学专利的分支反而更合适。因为芝加哥大学不是纽约大学Stern商学院、不是加州大学伯克利分校的Haas、也不是麻省理工的Sloan或者宾大的沃顿学院。每一所大学都有他独特的行事风格、所要达成的目的和方法。只有任大学们自然生长才能保证美国的高等教育资源还是一样的丰富，如世界各地的学生们憧憬的一样。

Icanunderstandwhatthestudentmeanttosay,especiallywhenastudenthastheopportunitytoearnabusinessdegreefromatoprankingUSuniversity.Afterall,conventionalwisdomthesedaysdictatesthatabusinessdegreeistheessentialingredienttoasuccessfullife.Manyprospectiveapplicantsandtheirfamiliesbelievegettingabusinessdegreeisthesafechoiceorthebestbet.Sorecently,whentheUniversityofChicagoreverseditsplantocreateanewbusinessmajor,itcausedastir.Shouldn’taworld-classtoprankinguniversitylikeUChicagoofferabusinessmajor?Butthedecisionmakessense.Businesshasnobusinessherebecause“Business”isnotapassion,especiallyonethatyoucanstudy.
我很理解学生想表达什么，特别是当学生有机会在美国的顶尖学府念商科的时候。毕竟社会的经验告诉我们：一个优秀和成功的人生，商科文凭是必不可少的。很多学生和家庭认为一个商科文凭是社会生存中最安全和最稳妥的选择。所以当芝加哥大学在讨论是否开设本科商科项目时，引起了一定的社会舆论。
芝加哥这样的顶尖学校不应该提供本科的商科项目吗?仔细想想，他们的决定是正确的–因为商科项目在芝加哥大学的大环境里是没有“市场”的。就商科本身而言，它不是一种热情，更多是作为一种工具而存在。

曾几何时，商科不是一个专业，而且它也不是成功的必备要素。著名的亨利·福特和安德鲁·卡内基都没有商科文凭，他们甚至都没有接受过正式的教育，但是这也没有妨碍他们学习。
几十年后，在商科专业盛行的今天，也能找到各种放弃商科专业的例子。大家都知道乔布斯退学了。星巴克的前任CEO霍华德·舒尔茨本科是通信专业。马云当年学的是英语。阳光媒体集团的联合创始人杨澜本科学习了国际经济和英语文学。张欣，中国SoHo创始人是经济学专业毕业。其实大部分的商业大咖不需要商科文凭来证明自己的实力。他们起初追逐的是他们的初心和好奇心(对于我的学生，我定义的“好奇心“是指我们多变的兴趣与不断发展的热情。)
Curiouspeoplewanttosolveproblems,howeverbig,howeversmall—andtheworldhasmanyofthese.Notethatit’snotwiththedegreethatpeoplesolvetheseproblems,it’sthroughcriticalthinkingandtheblendofsoftskillsandhardtechnicalskills.Successfulentrepreneursknowthattheirstrengthishavingthoseskillstosolveproblems.Each“businessperson”solvesaprobleminanareatheyaresointerestedin,whetherit’sharnessingtechnologytoimproveK-12educationormakingtheperfectcupofcoffee.That’swheretheirsuccesscomesandthat’showtheycreatevalue;asStanfordprofessorTinaSeeligsays,“Nobodywillpayyoutosolveanon-problem.”
好奇的人愿意去尝试解决世界上各种大大小小的问题。需要注意的是：文凭解决不了问题，问题需要由具备批判性思维和软硬实力的人来解决。成功的创业者知道他们的强项在于有解决问题的技能。每一个“商业人士”都会解决他们感兴趣的问题，不管是更好地利用科技来改变K12教育还是制作最完美的一杯咖啡。这就是他们成功的来源和创造价值的方法。斯坦福教授TinaSeelig说过：没有人会聘请你来解决一个不是问题的问题。

我会想到我的学生。比如说今年我的一个学生特别喜欢飞机。他从小就会思考：“为什么飞机飞得起来?我怎么制造飞机?”今天他在思考他怎么让自己的飞机模型更轻更快更安全。在未来的某一天他或许会协助我们制造世界上最省能量的太阳能飞机。我另外的一个学生特别喜欢画建筑。如果只看建筑图，你仅仅会看见很摩登和未来式的房屋和大厦。但是她的特点来源于她的受众群体：她想设计能让老弱病残人士居住更方便的住宿环境，可以让他们行动更自由舒服。我帮助过上千学生，而在这个过程中，最成功的学生都是围绕着自己所爱而学习的学生们。他们追逐自己的好奇心，真是爱你所爱，行你所行，听从你心，无问西东的代表们。

如果你把商科作为大学专业申请的第一志愿，我并不是想说这个是错误的。我的意思是你应该把它跟你热爱的方向结合起来，即使其他人认为这是没有用的。想象一下，如果你选择的商科专业是基于你所热爱并且有价值的事情的基础之上，你能够做什么，比如建造生态自行车或者开发对皮肤安全的化妆品等等。如果有(或者没有)商科背景(或者有其他的专业背景)你都能做这个事情，那么你将真正看到你是多么大的潜力，因为你将证明的不是一个专业，而是一生的使命理想。
