和jock是现今美国学生常用的两个俗语。nerd的意思和汉语中的“书呆子”类似。这类人往往是聪明勤奋,但却过于保守严肃,在校园里颇让人瞧不起。jock则恰恰相反。他们魁梧帅气,很受女孩子们的欢迎,尤其擅长American football和basketball等各种体育运动。当然,校园中也不乏漂亮的girl jocks。
ead这个词在1952年的美国总统大选中曾被首次使用。当时的竞选双方分别是二战盟军总司令艾森豪威尔和书生气十足的伊利诺伊州州长史蒂文森。史蒂文森精心准备的竞选演讲文字华丽晦涩,只有和他一样的知识分子才会感兴趣。因此对手取笑他说:Sure,all the eggheads love Stevenson. But how many eggheads do you think there are。egghead的意思,就是指书生气很足的知识分子。
和city slicker这两个词的意思也是在各种语言中一定都能找到对应的词,它们分别是城里人和乡下人对对方的贬称。hick的意思是“乡巴佬,土包子,”而 slick字面意思是“圆滑的,油滑的”,因而city slicker也就是乡下人眼中的“城里老油子,打扮光鲜,老于世故却不可信的城里滑头”。
ey(火鸡),shrimp(虾)和crab(螃蟹)这三种动物在美国人眼中会是什么人呢?turkey是美国人在 Thanksgiving Day和Christmas Day家家都要吃的食物。但是,活的火鸡样子难看,行动又笨拙,所以turkey就用来形容那种愚蠢无用的人。而那种雇用了这些turkey,又不能开除他们的政府或商业机构就被称作turkey farm。shrimp常被用于指代那些个子矮小的人或无足轻重的小人物。请看下面的句子:You may call Napoleon a little shrimp. But for a shrimp,he certainly made the rest of Europe tremble。而crab因为长相丑陋凶恶,常被用来指那些性格暴躁、脾气很坏的人。
boomer,yuppie(雅皮士),dink(丁克),sandwich generation这四个词反映了美国经济和社会变化。二战结束后的二十年内,美国人口激增,那个时期出生的人在美国被称作baby boomers,因为boom有激增、暴涨之意。yuppie(雅皮士)(young urban professionals)是指生活在大城市、受过高等教育、生活富裕的成功职业人士。dinks (double income,no kids)是指那些有很好的工作和收入,但是不要孩子的夫妇。sandwich generation则恰恰相反,他们是既要赡养老人,又要抚养下一代,像三明治一样被夹在中间的经济负担较重的一群人。
h potato和mall rat是两个和美国人生活习惯有关的俗语。couch potato指一有时间就坐在沙发上看电视的人,一声不吭,一动不动,就像一个圆滚滚的土豆。而mall rat当然不会是购物中心的真老鼠,而是指没事儿老喜欢到mall(大商场)里去逛的人。
seat driver,wheeler-dealer,free-wheeler,fifth wheel是四个和汽车有关的常用习语。backseat driver坐在汽车后排,却不停地对前面开车的人指手画脚,因此是指那些自己不在岗位上,但是却喜欢给在位的人提供人家不需要的意见的人。 wheeler-dealer精明能干,是那种善于运用权利和财势在政治或商业活动中为所欲为,独断独行的人。free-wheeler喜欢自由,不受约束,是指那些不愿意遵守自己工作单位的规章制度,想怎么做就怎么做的人。而fifth wheel的意思则很好猜出。一辆汽车只有四只轮子,那么,fifth wheel当然是多余的、不受欢迎的人了。
n thumb和all thumbs也是两个很有意思的俗语。green thumb指善于养花种草的人,这些人总是能把花园收拾得绿色怡人,养出来的花草光亮健康,羡煞那些费了很多劲儿,种出来的花草蔬菜却总是半死不活的人。所以,green thumb就是那些很会养花种草的人。如果说一个人是all thumbs会是什么样呢?想想看,拇指虽好,可要是十个指头都长成短短粗粗的拇指,干起活来肯定很难受。因此all thumbs便是形容一个人笨手笨脚。
y-pincher和cheapskate都是指花钱很小心、吝啬的人。penny是一美分,pinch意为“捏”,顾名思义,penny-pincher就是那些连一分钱都要在手里捏得紧紧的、舍不得花出去的人。cheapskate则是万事以省钱为本,越省越好,请客最多带你去MacDonald。这种人往往不受欢迎,尤其令他们的女朋友反感。从这个意义上说,cheapskate比penny-pincher更贬损。
ng chicken和lame duck是指春天孵出的小鸡和瘸腿的鸭子吗?当然不是,读一读下面这两句话,猜猜它们的意思吧。(1)The woman said,over forty,so I'm not a spring chicken any more。(2)The governor of our state ended up as a lame duck when he lost the election. 问题1:听听力的时候是否可以不听原文直接用技巧做题?

不听原文,而直接做对题的情况只出现在童话里.但是换句话说,做题也不需要100%听懂原文内容, 但托福听力的对话和讲座都有相对固定的结构,这些结构都遵循一般的讲课或者解答问题的逻辑,从这个角度来说,也反映了国外口头作文的习惯。

因此,如果我们把握了它们的结构,找到它们传递信息的规律,就可以很容易地找到出题点,同时对提高我们的写作水平也是有好处的。通过对以往20年的真题分析,我们发现,新托福和旧托福听力相比,虽然篇幅加长,但是给我们的反应时间是充裕的,录音的信息点并不是集中出现的,一般是有节奏性的,隔一段时间给出一个信息点。所以,我们听的时候,最好也能分辨出部分信息点。

问题2:听力中是否会出现非北美地区的口音?

托福听力在前年做了两次重要的改革:

第一是对考试报名的间隔时间做了新的调整,缩短了两次报名之间的间隔时间;

第二就是官方加入了非北美地区的朗读者的口音。

因此,在托福听力考试过程中,你有可能听到,英音,澳音。但无论如何,托福听力不考奇怪的口音。大家最常听到的是美音,根本不用为了考托福听力而去练习听黑人大哥的英语。所以托福听力应该使用专门的听力训练材料,不过这样的好材料不多。

问题3:我应该使用什么资料来备考呢?采用怎样的先后顺序?

第一次考试只做到15套就可以了,后面的可以留2套做模考。针对听力基础不好的同学,可以先做托福的官方指南和旧托福的第三部分,以及CBT考试的讲座部分,用这些打基础,补充背景词汇并且练习精听。

单词是考托福的基础,基础不扎实就很难逾越80分,这是无数考生的血泪经验。单词+听结构记笔记+做题,这样的方法是经过长期证实的。曾经有个学艺术的学生,第一次考托福是30分。但学校还是来了录取信,校方说如果她考到80分,就给她5万美金的奖学金。于是她很努力地考试,但是第一次,只背了单词,考了30分。第二次,单词背了两遍,考了60多分。第三次,70分,到了第四次她终于考到了80分。

由此可见,听力训练是一个循序渐进的过程,只有基本能力加上一定的技巧方法,才能最终获得高分。

问题4:有些讲座太专业了,我都没有背景知识,怎么才能听懂呢?

在官方指南上,ETS明确说了,听力考试并不要求大家有专业的背景知识。凡是遇到比较难的专业术语,老师就会给出解释,所以大家不需要熟练的掌握背景知识。曾经听说过一个很痛苦的话题,讲的是帕金森综合征,听了也不太明白,但是我把所有的专业术语的定义都记下了,还有一些原因啊,结果啊,例子啊,都把发音记下来了。

我发现其实考查的时候很少有题目在考专业知识,如果考的话,也是老师反复解释的,因此即使不是十分理解,也可以根据笔记,也就是老师当时的解释,把题目做对。听说读写的词汇是不一样的,听力词汇更强调听音的过程。不仅要听得见,而且要听得准、写得准。

问题5:听力中的这些单词我都背过,并且写下了我都认识,怎么一听就听不出来了呢?

这个问题有三个原因:

一个是很多人背单词都不喜欢背发音,就是自己大概猜测发一个单词的音。事实证明,因为猜测的发音都不太准确,所以做听力的时就听不出来。

第二个原因,就是听力里的单词不是单个给的,有时候有吞音、连续,所以会听不出来。

第三个原因就是,有些单词的发音不只有一种,或者具备同样发音的单词不仅仅有一个即同音异义,导致童鞋们在临考时分辨不清!

解决的方法,一是背单词的时候要通过听读的方式背,另外就是多通过跟读对话来熟悉吞音、连读。针对第三种情况就要求大家在平时听写训练的时候就注意积累一音多词,或一词多音的单词,以备不时之需!

还有童鞋们可以放心的一点就是,一般出考点的时候,都是发音相对清楚的,仔细辨别还是能听出来的。

问题6:听力考不考习语和俚语?

在旧托福的考试中,有很多的习语和俚语。新托福的对话和讲座中则很少考到习语和俚语,所以大家不必花费很多的时间背诵这些内容。但是一些生活中常用的词组,例如:drop off, stop by , 还是会经常听到。这些内容还是要多熟悉一下。我们在学校学习英语时,都会进行大量的精听和泛听训练,其实这是提高英语水平最扎实的工作。因此,对于托福听力,我也比较强调基本功。

问题7:什么是托福听力的泛听和精听,应该如何让安排?

大家要想真正提高听力基础,需要练习精听。

精听练习分为两种情况:

一种是精细到每个单词都听明白、弄懂。鉴于托福考试的讲座都很专业,有很多词汇考试过后基本不会再用,所以我不太建议全部精细地听写。

我建议听一句话,把主要内容能听写下来,或者复述下来最好。练习听一句话的关键词,理解整句的意思。对话可以逐句复述,因为都是生活中还会遇到的句型和词组。还可以边听边摘抄。但是因为听写很耗费时间,所以不建议太久,一个小时或者更短就足够了,主要是要集中精神地听。听得多了,你就会发现,自己的发音也会逐渐变好。

问题8:有时候听长的讲座到后面精力跟不上怎么办?

这种情况多出现在那些听得少的学生身上,因为不熟悉,所以听一会儿就容易疲惫。我们要培养自己的听力习惯,平时就要每天多练习几个讲座。建议2到3个讲座。每个讲座都按照考试的要求来做,不可以停顿,不可以中途休息。每个讲座听完录音、做完题目之后,再按照考试的时间播放录音。这样的练习多了就会慢慢提高听的耐性,一般坚持2到3个星期下来就可以看到效果。

问题9:我在听听力的时候总是容易走神,怎么才能克服这个问题呢?

要是漫无目的地听,大家都会走神,毕竟托福听力也不是什么很有意思的东西,所以大家都要带着问题去听,带着我们的预测信息去听,这样就能在很大程度上解决走神的问题。还有一种造成走神的原因就是大家习惯做毫无目的的泛听,这样会养成习惯性走神。所以大家要想考好托福听力,首先要放弃这种泛听的练习。平时练习听力的时候就要集中精神地听,练习抓信息点,时间长了就纠正过来了。

问题10:在听的过程中要不要记笔记?

要记!要记!要记!

一是防止走神,二是预测出题点。因为如果不记笔记,有些细节就是当时听到了,后来做题的时候可能也会忘记。但是我们不能盲目记,或者因为记笔记而干扰听内容。大家要在练习的过程中,找到一个最佳平衡点。

问题11:我应该怎样记笔记,哪些才是重点?

要按横纵向听力法记笔记,要发明自己的缩写,自己的符号。另外大家要特别注意,横纵向听力法提到的记笔记要点,不一定都要写下来。最重要的是写考点所在的信息。抓住要点,在听的过程中,注意听就行了。笔记应该精炼而有效。

问题12:我记完笔记答题的时候有时间看吗?

记笔记的过程是加深印象,只有少数的细节需要大家回去看笔记。另外也提醒大家,要多用标记,例如表示原因就写R,这样回去看笔记的时候才容易找到要点。记笔记的时候,一定要用缩写,这一点很重要。

8. 老师,我每天都模仿了一个小时,可以已经十天了,还是读不好。
